According to India Risk Survey Report 2017, fire is one of the top 3 risks across Education, Hospitality, Infrastructure, Media, Healthcare Facilities and Retail industries.

The major cause of fire outbreak in infrastructure could be due to Cable Short Circuit, Faulty Equipment and Appliances, Flammable materials, Negligence, Inadequate training of staff, Poor wiring and maintenance, faulty circuits in electrical panels, and circuit breakers. As per the report, electricity is the most common cause of fire in buildings and infrastructure.

In India, National Building Code (NBC) provides guidelines for regulating the building construction activities across the country. It revolves around four major pillars of safety, i.e. structural safety, health safety, fire safety & public safety. Part 8 on Building Services of the Code elaborates on the essential requirements for electrical and allied installations in buildings to ensure efficient use of electricity including safety from fire and shock.

However, one of the most important components of any infrastructure is the wiring. There have been many developments in the wire and cable technology, in terms of cable design and advance technology Today, we have house wires that are Flame retardant with low smoke properties. These have risen primarily due to requirements of low smoke & toxicity in case of fire, as against the popular notion that fire kills more people, but it is smoke that kills.
